“AstroWings 3: Icarus” is the third installment in the popular space shooter series of games for the iPhone and iPad. It has already exceeded the expectations of its developers, judging from the overwhelming success the game has enjoyed since its release last month.
AstroWings 3: Icarus is not the only vertical shooting game of its kind available in the App Store. But what makes it special is the unique concept of integrating flavors of mythology into a high-tech space-age shooter. The result is a game that loads on the eye candy and packs in the gameplay.
You play the game as Hera, a warrior goddess and the leader of a faction that’s currently smack dab in the middle of an all-out war between ancient deities and demi-gods. As the leader of her faction, Hera takes on the mantle of “Icarus” and his propensity for “ruling the skies”. Her enemies are denied even an inch of freedom as she seeks to dominate the airspace in their bid for victory.
But even if you don’t care about any old mythological backstory, “Icarus” is still a lot of fun to play. Customize your own space ship, load it up with weaponry, and let loose your firepower on countless enemy ships as you blast through a variety of beautifully-constructed environments.
There are actually three ships available to you, although only one is selectable at the start of the game. Each ship has different attributes to it and you can customize them all even more to your liking. You don’t need to search for the “FIRE” button, as the ship fires its weapons automatically. All you have to do is to fly your ship by flicking or swiping the screen in wherever direction you wish it to go.
Upgrade your weapons in between breaks, or you can choose to improve your ship’s HP and shields instead. But no matter which upgrade you choose, you’re gonna need it. The game’s difficulty is a bit higher than what most players may be used to, so you’re going to need all the advantages you can get.
We really don’t know whether it’s the unique storyline or the awesome shoot-em-up capabilities of AstroWings 3: Icarus that make the game an astounding success. However, with a roster of over 2 million players, you certainly cannot question the appeal of the game.
